Ok, so here is what happened. I dropped my computer, and went to turn it back on and it won't startup. I brought it to Geek squad, and they said that the driver has been damaged in the drop. Considering one of my higher grossing sites is on my xsite pro, and I do not have any external backups, I feel like I am royally screwed.

Geek squad took out the driver, and I have had it sent to their data recovery team to see what they can get out of it. Problem is, this is going to take 2 - 10 WEEKS for them to get back to me.

The short question I have is, what can I do to recover the existing files that I have on my site and restore them in a new version of xsite pro? I know I Can download my files via ftp, and I already have backups of my site running daily, however, this doesn't seem to help me in this scenario?

Is there a way to download my site (via ftp) and copy it onto a new version of Xsite pro on a different computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Rob

Unfortunately, unless you have an external backup, you will have to use the images and content from the online version and completely recreate the Web site in XSitePro.

I kind of figured that. Ok, would you advise waiting to see what can be recovered, or should i start the manual process of saving each page individually and reconstructing the site?

It depends on whether you think they will try really hard to recover your data. I would start recreating the site, personally. If they recover the data, fine. If not, you're ahead of the game.

Yes, but it's a really hard lesson to learn.

So why doesn't xsitepro have a backup built in so you can backup your sites on a server, like 99.9% of all of the other web dev. software on the web?

I think it's planned for a future release, but I don't know that for sure. You can use an FTP program to copy your backup files to your server. I do a full backup to an external hard drive. I also export individual Web sites that I'm currently working on to my hard drive and then copy them to my server. That's pretty quick and easy.

Ok, so I just got my new computer, and have just installed the latest version of XsitePro. Now, I am planning on copying over my existing site, page by page, and am wondering what the most efficient way of doing this would be. Do I just copy the images and the content for the pages on my site, or do I have to actually copy the html of each page.

Also, when I publish the site, will it essentially overwrite everything I have existing on the site? I just don't want to overwrite anything. Thank you.

Hi, Rob,

For the most part you don't have to copy any HTML, however there may be third party scripts, etc. that you will either need to copy from the online site or recreate in your new version.

Yes, anything you upload will overwrite what is already online, if it has the same file name, so back up your site online or download all the files to your hard drive using an FTP program... just in case!

Got it, thanks. And yes, there are some scripts from other programs I will need to install, so thanks for pointing that out as well. Any recommendations for a good Free FTP software?

Hey Ablewebs,
Thanks for your help so far! Just one quick question, I am just about finishing up copying the entire site, and should be ready to go. Now, you said when I publish the site, it will overwrite everything that is already existing, correct? If there are any errors in the page name, for instance, productXYZ.html was copied accidentally as productXYY.html, then I will have 2 copies of essentially the same page on the server, right? Thanks again.

Ok, so here is the deal, I just published the entire recreated site and no changes have appeared. I have refreshed my browser, and even checked in internet explorer and nothing. I also created a test page and uploaded that and nothing appeared (404 error).

I also have just checked my files on my cpanel, and they are all the same files from the previous publish (before the rebuild)

My ftp connection is good, I tested it to be sure it worked, and my username / password is good. Any ideas? My site is exactly the way it was before I published the site.
