Hello,

I am new with XSitepro, and am about to publish for the first time. Here's my question:

I have redone an entire website. The original website has some files in the root directory, but most of them (over 200) are in directories and subdirectories. It looks like XSitePro has all of its pages in the root directory. So, do I publish the new site first and then delete the old site from my server, or do I delete the old site first, and then publish the new site? Or, should I do something else?

Any help would be appreciated.

The tidiest way would be to back up all the old files, including the ones in the root directory... or at least copy the root directory files to a backup folder. Then delete all the files in the root directory and publish your XSitePro site.

Thanks for your quick reply! Just to make sure I understand...

Back up all the old files on the server, or just on my hard drive? The "old" website already exists on my computer hard drive, so in that sense it is "backed up."

After that, I should delete only the root directory, and leave all of the files in the directories and subdirectories on the server? That being the case, will I need to do a 301 redirect for all of those files, or do I just let them be, or can I delete them?

Sorry for all the very specific questions, I just want to make sure I don't goof it up.

Thanks for your patience.

You can delete those folders if you want. All files that are currently in folders will need a 301 redirect to the new files, if you have people linking to those files and/or you are worried about page rank in Google for those pages.

Ok, thanks, I think I understand. Make sure the "old" site is backed up on my computer, delete the old site from the server (do a 301 redirect for any pages that might have a decent Google page rank or that are linked to externally), and then publish the new site.

Thanks ablewebs!
