I recently rebuilt my system (for the umpteenth time, thanks to Vista!!!) and restored my data directory from my backup. Lesson one learned, don't rely on normal backups, make backups from within XSP.

When I went to open my site, nothing was there. I went back through my data and had a lot of directories with numbers that contained all the graphics and other files I added to my sites. The one for the current site, however, didn't exist. So, I went back to the web and copied the data for the header, footers, and panels, then recreated each page from the original data. It wasn't too bad, but it was a little time consuming.

I still don't have a directory in my data directory, however, that contains the contents of the File Manager. I just checked again, and there is nothing on my C drive that even resembles what I should see. I have a graphics image named clipboard2.gif. I did a search on my C drive and the only thing I found was a shortcut to the image on my external drive where I have my development server.

I do publish locally to the E: drive where I have an adobe server set up. That way I can see the site in real time and make any changes I want before I publish to the web.

But where are my development files? Where do the files go when I save the website? They are somewhere because I can close the site, exit XSP and when I come back I can open them again.

Interestingly enough, I did a backup from within XSP and when I looked at the backup there was a directory named 66 that had all my files in it (the ones that appear in the File Manager.) Yet when I went back to my data directory under XSP the 66 directory does not exist.

So, where have all my files gone?

Hi DrP,

All the files, for all the websites you create with XSP, are stored in the folder "Data" from the "C:/Program Files/XSite Pro" directory.

However, because of how the software is structured, you will not see the html files there.

The html files can only be seen when you publish your website locally, when you preview the website or when you publish the website on your hosting account.

Exactly!

Now, why can't I see my graphics files, and why isn't there a subdirectory under Data for this site? When I did a backup it created a folder for this site named 66. It has all of the files from File Manager. It does not appear in the XSitePro/Data folder.

When I do a search on drive C:, the files do not appear.

I just looked again, and the 66 file is in the backup folder, but it is not in the Data folder. Why?

Hi DrP,

Did you try to look in the "Sites" folder as well?
