I have all my websites hosted at hostgator and at some point during the day today about half of them started showing up with internal server errors, meaning they can no longer be accessed.

I had a live chat with someone at hostgator who told me the problem is with the htaccess file produced by XSP and he has no idea how to fix it. This makes no sense to me because some of these sites have been running fine for about 2 years but as of today they are down (and are obviously no longer earning me any money). He had no explanation as to why they would stop working all of a sudden, just repeated the problem is with the htaccess file created by XSP.

Has anyone else experienced this and maybe know of a solution?

I've lost 10 websites and am starting to panic a bit.

Ned

XSP does not create htaccess files.

Log into your site using an FTP program, and look for an htaccess file.
If you find one, download it to your desktop, then delete it from the server.

If this corrects your problem, then it is indeed and htaccess problem, and you will need to look at your htaccess file to see what is wrong with it.

If this does not correct your problem, contact HG and tell them they are wrong.

Thanks for that. My only problem with this is that some of the htaccess files are coded to run scripts while others are not. There is no common denominator among the sites affected so I can't see where this would be the problem.

And like you thought, some of the sites don't even have an htaccess file.

The hostgator rep I had a chat with suggested I go ahead a file a support ticket so one of their admins can take a look. I've done that so we'll see what happens.

Hostgator was quick to solve the problem. Here's the response:

There was an error in a .htaccess file in your home directory. That has been resolved and it is working properly now.

I'm glad to be back in business but still wonder what caused the error and why it affected some add on domains and not others.

I hate responses that do not tell what the issue was.
I left my last host for that reason, among others.

That's exactly why I wrote back asking for a more detailed explanation. Unfortunately they couldn't help.

"Did you attempt to install frontpage extensions on any of your sites? Did you turn on hotlink protection?

These are the most common causes, the logs don't give a single specific answer."

Unfortunately the answer to both these questions is no, so I guess I won't find out for sure.
