What books would you recommend for beggining to learn css and javascript? I have heard good things and bad about the bible and I tried the Javascript and Dhtml cookbook but it was difficult to read does anyone have suggestions?

I find the best way to learn is with video, there are lots of sites that have free video tutorials
and here is one in particular

These are pretty good for beginners because they give you test windows to use for trial and error exercises:

For Javascript:
