Many of us would like to place a menu above the header. This is possible now but you have to fight XSP to get it to work.
It also involves editing source code, something many XSitePro users lack the knowledge to do.

Currently, when I build a site where the client has specified a menu above the header I don't even bother with the XSite Pro menus,
I just code the menu in JavaScript and CSS and put the menu in a table row above the header. (It's actually still in the header section.)
Since it's in the header it gets published on every page. The menus script(s) or calls are placed in the HEAD section of the code via Global Scripts. Although this works well, it can be a bit of a maintenance chore when adding pages.

Edited to add: Why not add a check box in the Header configuration section to "Include Links Above Header" just as we currently do to include links for the Left Panel, Right Panel, Main Panel Header, Main Panel Footer and Footer?

Hang on,
Isn't the header at the top of everything?

Basically what you want is the menu above the banner, so just create some white space above the banner,
A two row table, with the menu in the top row, and the banner as a inserted graphic, in the bottom row.

I hope this helps!

Kindly provide an example of a site you have built with XSite Pro where you have put a standard XSite Pro menu above the header as described above. Please explain how this is done without editing and moving source code from the XSP generated code.

Hi Copywolf

Not sure I am 100% on the ball here but if I am then its relatively easy. To do what you want you can ignore Header section completely and just build everything into Info bar.

If you look at all the new fangled XSP Templates available in the Club they use this method.

Here is a very SIMPLE example http://www.thaigerweb.com

I dont use a "header" graphic on that site but I could if I wanted one.

As you can see the Menu sits at the top and I THINK that's what you mean.

Here is another one

http://www.pattayagym.com/

That one DOES use a graphic but again it is placed in the Info Bar not the "header". The menu on that one is underneath the graphic but could easily be moved to the top.

Hope that helps - if I am off the mark, sorry.

Thanks Thaigerweb,

Building everything into the info bar panel is a great idea. I will give it a go the next time I need a menu above the "header."

My point is that XSP already gives us the capability to include menus/links in various panels. The developers clearly know how
to code this function, so, why not give us the capability to place the info bar (menu) above the header? This feature would
just add one more option for web site developers using XSP.

This is not a problem for me. I just add a CSS or CSS/Javascript menu above the header. My clients don't care how the menus
get where they want them as long as the menus work well.

Yeah, I've been using the info bar for this and it works well.

With web 2.0 styling, many sites have links on the very top and then a second row of links under the "header" graphic. This can be done by using the main panel header as an "info bar" below your header image... but i'm sure you can see the issues with it, like if you also want to use a left or right panel without having to set it all up in tables.

What I think would be great is if the XSP folks added the "Insert Menu" option as a right click option. Then you could insert a menu anywhere into XSP including multiple menus in the same section. The only problem would be how would you set which pages show on the menu? I'm sure this could be done by adding another tab to the menu wizard.

Jeramiah's "Menu Wizard" is an even better approach. Give us a "Menu Wizard" icon and right-click call to bring up the wizard.

Still, being able to include a menu in the header panel would be a nice interim improvement.

Hi CopyWolf

On the same lines I would like to be able to use the background left or right of the header for widgets like print this page, favorites, social bookmarks etc to save space in the left/right menu area.

To my knowledge not a feature of XSite Pro2. Any tips? I'm to much of a newbie to know a solution.

One option is to design your header a little less wide and include a space for those easy to find clicks. If you go this route you will also have to make adjustments to your right column to account for the extra width.

Another option is to use a static floating image or something. You can pick up a script to do this at Dynamic Drive or from Hotscripts.
