I am a newbie to XSitePro and just today published my first website. The site has four text links to PDF files. When my site was still in XSitePro the links all worked perfectly. Now that the site is live, the links no longer work. I am using HostGator, and see that the files are in a subfolder under /public_html.

Do I have to go back to XSitePro and change the URL's in my resource file to make these links work?

Any help greatly appreciated.

If the links to the files are incorrect, then yes the path needs to be corrected. But another reason for PDF's not showing up is when they are named with spaces or non-alphanumeric characters in them (other than dashes and underscores).

Thanks, Andrea. I'll keep fiddling with it. I was hoping that pdf files that I save in my XSitePro resource library would automatically be uploaded correctly to my host server. I guess not, so I'll edit them. I'm having trouble getting the hang of the HostGator system, plus just learning XSitePro. Will talk you later.

If your PDF's are in the Resource Manager, they will be uploaded to the server, but if the file names include spaces, the links to the PDF's probably won't work.

Hi Andrea: no, the PDF files have no spaces. When they get uploaded to my host the actual name of the pdf file is fine, but maybe I don't understand the URL. I am not getting good help from HostGator on the settings I'm supposed to be using in my XSitePro FTP manager. Here is exactly what I've used:

Domain Name: www.dmichaelmillerpe.com
Home Directory: www.dmichaelmillerpe.com/home/dmmiller
FTP Server: www.dmichaelmillerpe.com
FTP Directory: www.dmichaelmillerpe.com/home/dmmiller/public_html

Based on the above, it looks like the link URL, as one example, would be http://www.dmichaelmillerpe.com/home/dm ... uality.pdf. So I went back to XSitePro, went to the home page where the link is and changed the source to the above. Didn't work.

I'm probably taking up too much of your time, but any help would be appreciated.

Publishing Details should be as follows, if this is a top level domain for a HostGator account:

Domain Name: www.MainDomain.com
Home Directory: (leave this blank)
FTP Server: ftp.MainDomain.com
FTP Directory: /public_html/

Your Publishing Details would look like this:

Domain Name: www.dmichaelmillerpe.com
Home Directory: (leave this blank)
FTP Server: ftp.dmichaelmillerpe.com <----Note: this is not what you have now
FTP Directory: /public_html/

==================================

If this is a Sub-domain, it should be as follows:

Domain Name: Subdomain.MainDomain.com
Home Directory: (leave this blank)
FTP Server: ftp.MainDomain.com
FTP Directory: /public_html/SubDomain/

==================================

If this is an Add-on domain, it should be as follows:

* Domain Name: www.AddonDomain.com
* Home Directory: (leave this blank)
* FTP Server: ftp.MainDomain.com
* FTP Directory: /public_html/AddonDomain/

Andrea: thanks so much. That solved some of my problems; HostGator did not give me the same info you did; all they did was confirm that the wrong information I had in there was okay.

Now I have to figure out how to go back to XSitePro and make those 4 pdf links work. I'm confused because the HostGator file director has two images and pdf folders with identical content. At least I was able to get the website up, but I hate to have bad links.

I've been doing things the easy way on my main website, www.florida-backroads-travel.com, having built it using SBI. Hosting and content management etc all in one.

Regards, Mike

Hi, Mike,

I have to go out for the evening shortly, but I'll be glad to keep working with you tomorrow until we resolve the PDF problem.

Andrea: thanks so much. You are my hero (heroine). I've changed the source html on a couple of pages and got the links to work. The others are still giving me a 404 HostGator window. I'll check in tomorrow. Have a good evening. I'm about to start a website on living aboard and just a couple of days ago was looking at google sat images of Seattle and Vancouver. You are certainly in a beautiful part of the world.

Regards, Mike

Hey Mike,

I just looked at your site and you need to link your pdf files to here -

http://www.dmichaelmillerpe.com/Images-and-PDF-Files/

and not here -

Jason

Thanks, Jason. I just realized a short time ago that the links are case sensitive. I think I have them all fixed up now. Thanks for the help.

Hi, Mike,

Just checking in. Did Jason resolve your PDF problem for you?

Yes, Vancouver is very beautiful, but we basically live in a rain forest, so it's wet! It's pouring right now, as a matter of fact! The good thing is it almost never snows. At higher elevations, yes, but the city rarely gets much snow. Maybe one or two days. If we have snow for more than a week, that's unusual. And the weather is moderate, so you don't need a parka and fur-lined boots! lol

Hi Andrea: Jason figured out my problem, but believe it or not so did I a few minutes earlier. I didn't know links were case sensitive, ie Pdf is not the same as PDF.

Thanks for all the help. I still have a lot to learn about XSitePro, but at least I have one website up and am working on another. I'm along way from having the content and traffic to start monetizing as I've done with my SBI site.

Regards,

Mike
