When Should You Be Syndicating
Content?
Share Your Content Far and Wide - Some
Tips on Syndication.
Paul Smithson - 9th March 2009
Content syndication is a great way to get
extra traffic and backlinks and there are many ways that you
can do it.
You can syndicate the posts on your blog
through RSS feeds. You can allow webmasters to take
certain content directly off your site in exchange for a
backlink or you can post articles to various article
directories.
Most webmasters don’t like to allow people
to syndicate articles directly from their site, because they
fear the possibility of a duplicate content penalty, which is
understandable. If you do intend to syndicate content from your
own site, you might want to take the extra step of providing
edited versions that are slightly different to the ones you are
already using yourself. You can do this by putting the edited
versions into downloadable zip files. That way, webmasters can
download the articles, but search engines can’t index
it.
You can of course also syndicate your
content through RSS feeds. Most blog platforms have RSS
built in, so you can provide your content in your RSS
feeds. People can use RSS translators to add your content
to their web pages, or they can feed the content into their
blogs.
The most popular way for most webmasters to
syndicate their content is through article
directories.
Article directories like Ezine Articles and
GoArticles are basically big online catalogs of articles from a
wide number of writers. The articles can be read on the
article directory site itself, and they can be copied and used
on other sites too, as you long as the guidelines of the
article directory site are
followed.
When someone submits an article to an
article directory, they get to put some information in the
resource box at the end of the article. This will usually
consist of some information about the author, and a link or two
to their own website. It is the resource box that will
provide you with the backlinks into your site, because whenever
anyone copies that article for use on their own site one of the
requirements is that the resource box, and any links within the
resource box, must be included.
Submitting articles to article directories
helps you gain immediate backlinks to your site from the
directories themselves, but if your articles are interesting
and engaging, other webmasters will pick up on them and
download them for use on their own sites. After a while,
you may find dozens or even hundreds of backlinks to your site
because of the articles you’ve
syndicated.
Another benefit of submitting to article
directories is the immediate traffic you can receive from the
article directories themselves. Although this traffic is often
minimal, it can still be quite
significant.
The question really isn’t if you should
syndicate your content, but when. That time is now.
As soon as you have a website that is ready to receive traffic,
you should start syndicating. The longer you delay, the
more free traffic and backlinks you could be missing out
on.
